About the Video: This webinar was held July 25, 2012 and was led by Bob Libal of Grassroots Leadership, an organization that works with communities across the country to abolish for-profit prisons, jails, and detention centers and strives to reduce criminalization and incarceration. Bob Libal is Grassroots Leadership's Senior Organizer and incoming Interim Executive Director. Bob headed Grassroots Leadership's Campaign to End Immigrant Family Detention, an effort that successfully contributed to ending family detention at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, Texas. Libal serves as co-chair of the national Detention Watch Network steering committee, and as editor of the Texas Prison Bid'ness blog which monitors the private prison industry in Texas. More than 34000 people are detained in the US every day, and nearly 400000 passed through this system every year, without regard to them being recently-arrived, asylum-seekers, long-time residents, or permanent legal residents convicted of minor criminal offenses. Through this webinar training, people will learn why and how to start a visitation program with information from other successful visitation programs that have resulted in hundreds of visits to detained immigrant and asylum-seeking women in the past year. Additional speakers include Dan Furmansky from Standing on the Side of Love, David Fraccaro from National Visitation Network, and Jan Meslin from Tapestry UU in Mission Viejo, CA.
